Parodies (Song parodied / Parody title / Performer(s) / Source / year)

And She Was, Once In a Lifetime / Dog Eat Dog / "Weird Al" Yankovic / Polka Party (album) / 1987

Burning Down the House / Polkas On 45 / "Weird Al" Yankovic / In 3-D (album) / 1984 [Just a single line in a medley.]

Life During Wartime, Once in a Lifetime / SNL Fashion Report with David Byrne / Rich Hall / Saturday Night Live (tv-NBC) / 1984 [11/3/84, Michael McKean host]

Once In a Lifetime / Kermit the frog, on Muppets Tonight (TV) (6/7/96, hosted by Whoopi Goldberg)

Psycho Killer / Psycho Chicken / The Fools / The 12" Fools (EP) / PVC 4908 [This EP has a censored version. The song is also available as a 45 on yellow vinyl with "clucked" version on one side and "beeped" on the other (EMI SPRO-9331, promo). This 45 is probably the same as the Psycho Chicken single included in their first EMI album, "Sold Out" and is the same as the European black vinyl 45 of Psycho Chicken. There is a live uncensored version on the "First Annual Official Unofficial April Fools Day Live Bootleg" (EMI SPRO-9393/SPRO-9394) promo, (not a double album, each side has a different number.) Confused? So am I.]

Take Me To the River

OK, as the only cover on a Talking Heads studio release, this song is almost the exact opposite of what this list is cataloging, so in a perverse way, it belongs here, besides it's starting to qualify as a faq, so I'll just toss it in as a quick blurb. The song was originally written and performed by Al Green and his band. It has since been covered by no fewer than five different bands and performers.

The Heads themselves sampled the opening drum beat from their own version in the song Never Mind on No Talking Just Heads.

Academic A-Cappella (song / group / university / album / year)

These are self-released albums from college a-cappella groups. This information has been shamelessly lifted from the a-cappella recording lists maintained by Todd Biske (biske@netcom.com) on rec.music.a-cappella.

And She Was / Mixed Company / Stanford University / Unanimous / 1992

And She Was / The Pitchforks / Duke University / Tonal Eclipse / 1992

Psycho Killer / Amazin' Blues / University of Michigan / ABCD

Psycho Killer / Men's Blue and White / Pomona College / Silence Profound... / 1992

Psycho Killer / Pennsylvania Six-5000 / University of Pennsylvania / The Albatross is your Boyfriend / 1988

Stay Up Late / Wesleyan New Group / Wesleyan University / Old Hat
